Long before tattooing became a career, art was the place Ray went to make sense of the world. The imagery that first held him—skulls, snakes, symbols and old masters—still runs through the work today.
Travel deepened that language. Months in Rome brought him face to face with the scale and drama of European painting. Time in the Austrian Alps, near where Ötzi was found, connected tattooing to something far older. Summers near Pont d’Arc and the Chauvet Cave made the same point from another direction: people have always used images to carry memory, belief and identity.
Back in Canada, Ray entered tattooing through a traditional trial-by-fire apprenticeship in a busy shop. Jasper gave him independence and the name Black Diamond—the symbol for the most difficult run. Years at a respected Edmonton studio sharpened the craft. Eventually Stony Plain brought everything together: family, independence and the chance to build the studio he had imagined.
Today the work begins with composition, flow and meaning. Whether it is a single piece, a memorial, a cover-up or a long-form project, the goal is the same: make something that belongs to the body and carries its presence honestly.
